Steam Therapy

Steam Therapy

A Poem by Anna Auel

took a shower late
one night"washed the gore of the day down the drain
along with the film of the newborn rabbit, skin so thin and grey"
noiseless sucking at unforgiving air swirling down and down

now dead, its siblings mewing blindly  (down)underground.

rub my cheeks and eyes
the mascara runs down in streaks like the tears that preceded it.
Wrap a towel tightly, power tucked in thumb
muscles. The towel was made in Turkey--

no wait, that’s a mistake, it was Pakistan.

but Turkey popped up like a country in a pop-up book
Turkish baths began there.
The Turkish need towels after their baths"but Pakistan has perfected the art of giving comfort

to killers of rabbits.
