So Final

So Final

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

So Final

I am bereft of my delusions;

you have stolen them from me.

Those psychotic thoughts

at least were mine!

My reality

of a life so complex,

and so tainted in hate.

At least my madness

kept me from the gates of hell.

But you had to do it;

you had to feed me

your bitter pill,

so sugar coated

and easy to swallow.

Its sweetness a deception

to hide the poison within;

a poison so powerful

and so potent

and so final.

I detest pill pushers. "Atleast those psychotic thoughts were mine"..it makes a special kind of sense. I could attribute this poem to a particular kind of abusive personality but I am reading it as more broad then that. To me, I see this idea we have as a culture that there is something wrong with you if you are not smiling like a loon 24 hours a day and that we should all put on one big happy face and get over our hurt and pretend past the pain so we don't make other people sad. Just my take. Overall, this is a thinkers poem and I really enjoyed reading it. Nicely penned.

Metaphoric madness and metaphoric pills in this case!
So final; so good. Particularly loved the part about the bitter pill being sugar coated; thats so true. I'm sure most readers will be able to relate to this, I definitely can. Look forward to reading more of your work.
PS your son must be brilliant!!

Hi Lily Mae thank you for your lovely review.
I can relate to being drawn in by goodness and the promise of all your dreams fulfilled, only to be betrayed and left with the ugly reality of that person's true identity. Beautifully written, John.

Yay! I'm a mate! Living in the U.S., I've never had a mate, or been a mate! Thanks ;)
At least my madness
kept me from the gates of hell.
But you had to do it;
you had to feed me
your bitter pill,
so sugar coated
and easy to swallow.

Wow...and wow...I could feel your angst in this poem...I would hate to know what triggered your souce of inspiration. It's funny how the feelign of "madness" can inspire such brilliant poetry. Well done.
