Final Bow

Final Bow

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Final Bow

You wrapped me,

Houdini like,

in chains.

You asked me

to give all I had

to you

and you alone.

But you offered

little in return

and set before me

the terms of my surrender.

No negotiated settlement,

simply, fill your dreams or go.

I am a giver

and hence I tried to reason

with myself;

but served only to

release my demons

as this dilemma

proved a test too far.

I never thought I had such skill

But I became

an escapologist.

And now I stand proud

free to take

the final bow.
