Resilience

Resilience

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Resilience

I hear the children

in the fields at play,

their swings squeaking

with the oils

of naive protection.

Do we know

what lies beyond

for the young

and uninitiated child

who drifts to adulthood

in unbridled trust,

where monsters lay in wait

to take away their innocence?

Can we protect

and save them from

such risks

or should we aim

to give liberty

through resilience?

Thought-provoking write on the stages of growth from childhood to adulthood - and as a parent I can relate well to the points taken by this poem. While children grow up innocent and naive about the dangers that surround them, those who have the maturity and credible experience can provide them with the needed guidance (not control) and care, and warnings even, to grow with discipline and direction in their lives. Like clay, a child does not grow up responsible and mature all by himself, someone who cares enough to mold him must take the role and live it together with him. Resilience in life is also a skill learned, and taught, because standing up again after a fall requires courage. Thank you for this relevant work.

Thank you Cynthia for such a considered review. Very refreshing.

Always the question I think--how to balance innocence and the painful experiences needed to build resilience--thought provoking!

Many thanks
A lot of wise questions, with answers that are too far and in between to be able to come up with the perfect one, for none of us is perfect. Therefore, the perfect solution does not exist. The only thing we can do for our children is teach them how to listen to their internal instincts, teach them how to survive by using their minds and training the to always know how to defend themselves or to evade danger when necessary. Our world is changing but the will to survive and for our children's survival is what will lead us to the right path....

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
