Goddess Deity of the River

Goddess Deity of the River

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Goddess Deity of the River

Yami, daughter of Surya

free me from the torment of death

as I immerse in your sacred waters.

You are indeed to be venerated

as you rise in majesty

from the Yamunatri

on the slopes of the Banderpooch,

from the mighty Himalayas to the Ganges basin,

you irrigate and feed the land

and quench the people's thirst.

Thanks Quin
Indian mythology is so rich in fantastic imagery, your imagination certainly seems to have been fuelled by it. Planning a trip there?

This poem greatly brings out the reverence attached to sacred rivers in India. The Ganges, the Yamuna, the Narmada.

These great lines underline the belief and the worship...

"free me from the torment of death
as I immerse in your sacred waters.
You are indeed to be venerated"

-beautifully expressed John!
