Call Me Naive

Call Me Naive

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Call me Naive

So do you think love is a light bulb?

to be turned on in a moment of darkness

to illuminate our hearts,

only to flick the switch

when one of us leaves the room

and casts the other into night’s black place.

Do you see love a plastic cup

to be emptied, crushed and binned?

Or a disposable razor

to be discarded when dulled?

Surely this is not love

but merely passing fancies?

Surely love is more akin

a rugged, rocky coast

where weather beaten and

scourged by smashing breakers,

it becomes polished and smooth

but still endures.

Very thought provoking, beautiful pros and imagery. Great job overall. Love is a very interesting topic to explore, though I often find that the entire 'romance' or 'romance-esque' genre is very over-saturated with the same cliches and such, but your language is really what drives this idea home and cements it in the mind. Great work John!

I guess you are right Keith and I hope to mix many more forms in my writing!
Superb use of language and metaphor, and I think that you might mean, So do you think, love is like a Light bulb, easily done.

Yes thanks for pointing it out Sheema!
Love is not all sunshine and rainbows. It would be nice if that's all it was, but you would be naive to believe that. Great write!

Thanks AHP!
Iike the others, I agree. Using life's objects as a
comparison. I like especially the.. .
Or a disposable razor to be discarded when dulled?
That so much shows, how a lot of people perceive
love to be...obviously not real to them if dealt this way.
Thank you for sharing!!

ignorance is bliss (i know some very happy motherfookers)
This is truly wonderful, John. I love the use of everyday items to describe what love isn't and then the metaphor of love being a rocky shore polished by the weather. I am reminded that material things cannot buy love, that only time and devotion can sustain love. You never cease to amaze me by your turn of words.

Thank you Lori.
Enjoyed this, the use of everyday images like cups and razors to make the point; this is what good poets do,use things they see to make poetry, so to use the old cliche I often write ( but I like it) ....to see the truth in things...
