In Your Kitchen

In Your Kitchen

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

In Your Kitchen

I love to watch you in your kitchen

as you fuss about with the carefully crafted skills of a TV chef.

The ease with which you take the packets

and the tins, the sachets and the fresh ingredients

and blend them into a divine feast is spellbinding.

You make it look effortless as you smile and chat, relaxed.

I remember the first loaf you brought to me;

fresh baked and kneaded by your strong and pornographic hands.

I savoured every last crumb, made the wheat flavour burst over and over and over

as I swallowed the love you offered and longed for more.

I love to sit with you in your kitchen,

as you serve an evening meal,

with the dying summer sun setting on another day

and Oscar at our feet; always in the wrong place.

Or as we sup strong brewed coffee and chat,

turning over the morsels of our lives, sharing our vision

for our thrice baked recipe of a future promised.

I love to work in your kitchen,

playing your sous chef, slicing and chopping

and clearing and cleaning and washing.

It feels a privilege to be there for you,

to share your space in that bright place,

despite the overflowing of gadgets and utensils,

full capacious cupboards, and generously bulging fridge.

In a new and strange way I find it all so beautifully reassuring,

so fulfilling,

and so very loving,

being in your kitchen.

it is nice to have memories of just you two, you and your mom. the kitchen was always mom's domain. it was nice for you to chat and have coffee together in there. very insightful poem.

Very nice, welcome back! Make sure she spends some time in your kitchen though. Or whatever place you reign in.

Thanks Mark but I am going to write a bit less and be in the Cafe less good to hear from you.
This one serves up a delicous feast of words my friend. It was so much fun peeking in on your world today and seeing that love seems to be simmering and perhaps boling again.

Thanks Jack easing back in again!
John I adore this song, it holds so many memories for me, and really goes well with this amazing write. I am so glad to see you back on the cafe, it has been a while and you're missed.

This is a great write. Different from what I've read from you before, a different structure too. I liked it.

About
Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
