July Storm

July Storm

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Clearing the air!

"

July Storm

The oppressive heat,

the cloying humidity

fractured.

A summer storm

thunders from leaden skies

in a cacophony

of kettle drum rolls.

Steel sheets of rain

fall in torrents upon the dry earth,

and as the clouds disperse,

chased by clearing blue

they unveil the majesty

of this our much loved sun

once more.

The clouds press the light down,

heavy upon the land,

until their forced retreat

draws back the curtain

to the light.

And as I step outside,

and the tinkling of the deluge

slowly slips to silence

in gutters and downpipes,

there is an instant freshness

to the air that I breathe.

Yes, that is exactly what happens after a summer shower! We are missing them this year in South Florida. Driest summer on record so far. No relief from the broiling heat. The air does smell better after a summer shower and the grass and trees look happy they have been watered. Wonderful imagery in this imagery poem, John. Lydi**

Thank you ever so much Lydi and I wish I could sent those errant clouds your way for a while!
after the storm... such great imagery here, John... I love the image of the sun pushing down on the clouds until they can do not but retreat... you capture the coming and passing of the storm very well.. nice work
