New Horizons

New Horizons

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

We are a conundrum. New Horizons is the space probe that has just completed a fly past Pluto. Amazing achievement!

"

New Horizons

We have seen the deepest  canyons

and highest ice mountains of Pluto

up close and personal;

or at least Clyde Tombaugh

did the personal bit.

We have discovered

how we humans stick together

as a bunch of atoms;

sub atomic particles

pentaquarks,

five quarks,

the 'glue' that binds us.

And yet still our people starve

and live in fear of war, crime,

poverty, persecution

and terrorism.

Why is the human race

so well developed,

so innovative, creative

and intelligent,

and yet so selfish,

self destructive

and primitive?

How we can create the beauty that we do, yet be so uncaring and callous to our fellows, is a question that has vexed since the beginning.

The sadness in the eyes of a starving child and the enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa make uneasy bedfellows.

Beccy.

I'm quite sure North and South America and Australia would be still the same with indigenous people living with nature today as they did before we whiteman invaded. Our progress is from greed through our destruction, forever an a day till no more! As a race we are shockers and a nice write John

you pose the question very well John, we seem to have the power to innovate very well, our reach goes beyond our tiny solar system into the depths of space and yet here on Earth we still find those who feel it necessary to bring pain and suffering to other's it matters little to them that there is so much outside of our petty squabbles and restrictive beliefs, to crush and restrict is their idea and belief, your words ring true:
Why is the human race
so well developed,
so innovative, creative
and intelligent,
and yet so selfish,
self-destructive
and primitive?

Bravo for seeing the light that other's hide from :)

It is amazing what we have accomplished as humans yet also just as fascinating how we do spectacular things while not even taking care of the families that struggle to survive. Perfect example is how consumed we are in the high speed rail in California yet we have no water for anything here... so what do you do in the middle of crisis? Press on with the rail... it's become the human way of life to want more and to take more at all costs. Great write buddy :)

These are questions humankind will be asking itself centuries after we have left the Earth, John... we can spend billions trying to find water on Mars as millions starve on the harsh streets of life... we can spend billions to create the latest war technology to bomb people from the comforts of a chair in our bed rooms but we can't find shelter for the homeless... and in all our advancement we will never be able to cure the defects in human nature... well-said, my friend.
