Isatis Tinctoria

Isatis Tinctoria

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Isatis Tinctoria

Streaked tear tainted flesh,

woad stains still fresh

as the clearances

and imperial invasions

pre-empted an empire's expansion.

An army and navy that engulfed a world in its pink

as it sought it's own salvation.

And we the merest of nations

were met with an iron fist,

and a deep pocket.

Neighbours so unequal as to be

stripped of all our notions

of brotherhood,

of sainthood,

of freedom.

had to look up your title ..how educational ..i read it is recently being looked at as anti-carcinogenic .. but i am ignorant still as to the nations referred to .. i get a sense of those in antiquity but certainly has application to our world today ..thought provoking and stimulating read .. love the warring of color .. i think this is a solid, smart poem ..very emotive for the sensitive of heart that sides with underdog ..
