Finding Fulfilment

Finding Fulfilment

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen
"

Sometimes even though we are supposed to be happy we are not!

"

There is a sadness to longing

which hangs over us like a pall,

that overshadows each day

with foreboding and doubt,

even when we think we are there

at the end of the rainbow

they all talk about.

Sometimes an emptiness,

a hunger, gnaws at our core,

like a knotted ball of lead

in our love empty bellies,

that pulls us inexorably

like gravity, back to ground zero,

where we are far too heavy

to soar back to the sky.

Where did it all start?

How did we arrive here

in the jungle of misgiving

and unfulfilled dreams?

How did a journey of hope

wither and die on the vine

leaving us on this deserted

god forsaken peninsula,

where only drowning

in sorrow is real.

How do we begin to live again,

to find purpose and meaning

to sustain us, give us back that spirit

we once took for granted?

How do we reach the path

of redemption from such torpor,

climb from these doldrums

and get the wind in our sails

again?

Perhaps it is the door to death we seek,

an end to the end game,

or maybe simply an end

to yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Perhaps the answer lies in the fire;

the fire of delicious desire for another

as it rekindles deep within the furnace

of a soul starved of romance.

Whatever,

I intend to seek it out,

find it,

and wring its neck

until it is dead!

A lot of food for thought here. To some degree, we all have a hunger one that is not easily satisfied. Never knowing when and if we will ever find it. Then there is the rub, once we have it, are we content? Will, there be more, must there be more quench our thirst for that which we are seeking?

Take care - Dave

Indeed so Dave and sometimes we are seekers for all time. Many thanks.
Wonderful metaphors here John, some beautiful lines yet your final stanza took me by surprise. It almost seems as though you are saying you want to kill the thing you want most. Excellent free verse.

Sleep well!
Great ending John. Show no mercy. Poets agonise over and over dramatise these kitchen dramas that need to be strangled at birth. Of course it's human nature to struggle with affairs of the heart and all common sense disappears.
You have some great images in your braw poem!
Cheers,
Alan

Well, have a long and complicated story and started it as an autobiography on Bebo but got writer's block/memory fogging. People liked it though and kept asking for the next chapter! fools.. more..
