The Soul

The Soul

A Poem by Paul Underwood
"

I'd like to thank my tutor Lynda Nash (Writer of Ashes of a Valleys Childhood) for inspiring me to look deeper into poetry and not just stories :). This is done in the style of a Sestina.

Soul

By

Paul Underwood

Soaring across the deep wide ocean

floating ever onward toward infinity.

Ever expanding out into the vastness of the universe

as though entranced by a hypnotic melody.

The gentle breeze blows and we continue our journey,

following sparkling blue comet trails, bright as a sapphire.

Stars forever shine beautifully like a suns reflection on sapphire

with a radiating colour of a summers ocean.

We traverse the waves on a mysterious journey

sailing the ocean of infinity,

bobbing up and down to a soothing melody.

Staring upward, we unveil the wonders of the expanding universe,

stars forever twinkle in the midnight skies of the universe.

Glowing with sparkle of a diamond and the brightness of a sapphire,

they flash with a steady rhythm of a tranquil melody.

Shooting stars dance with a vibrant sea across the ocean

waves with splashing curls rolling on to infinity,

bouncing along on a never-ending journey.

Now taking flight on this majestic journey,

ever upward in the vast openness of an inviting universe,

continually spiraling through the void to infinity.

Gazing toward a ball of emerald green and blue of sapphire

imagining the dancing splashes of the ocean

below, twirling majestically to a sweet melody.

Closing our eyes we listen to the deafening sounds of a silent Melody

and begin to whisper the tune of an endless Journey.

Just as the magic and beauty of the Ocean

plays a part in our enlightening Universe,

so too are the dazzling trails of Sapphire

lights, trailing on the ever turning wheel of Infinity.

Beyond the ever flowing veils of Infinity

flows the essence of an enchanting Melody.

A certain beauty of the mysterious Sapphire

taking us on a deep and magical Journey

through our own inner Universe,

ever in motion like the rhythmic tides of the Ocean.

As we harken to the abyss of the ocean, to the darkness of infinity

the answers of life’s Universe sing a melancholic melody.

Life leads us on many a Journey, every moment a mystery, precious as a flawless sapphire.

Welcome to Writers Cafe! Infinity is always a topic i am trying to address (usually failing, but anyway...) and i feel like this poem does a great job. Especially how you connect infinity to sapphires and then, in the last stanza, equate every moment we experience with a "flawless sapphire". Divine.

Those poems are very hard to write, but you have made a lovely piece from all those rules.

It reminds me of The Aleph, by Jorge Luis Borges. The short story wherein is described the point in space from which we can see all other points; a motif of infinity. (Quick reference to Sheikh Google later reveals:) The form of the Hebrew letter Aleph 'represents the upper and lower waters of creation', further echoing the oceanic elements of your poem.

Well, whether it was intended or otherwise, it was very enjoyable!
