One Battle

One Battle

A Poem by Adam Light

I've only won one battle,
in all my years on Earth.
Just one single victory,
to prove that I have worth.
I was not a brave combatant,
always ready and alert.
I was often beaten badly,
with my face down in the dirt.
Seasons changed 4 times a year,
and every year was new.
I never died down in the dirt,
nor gave up on what was true.
Just one kind of demon?
Is that who with I warred?
Of that, I am not certain,
but I know they met my sword.
Now, I'm a little older,
but it's not time to rest.
I'll celebrate by fighting on
and giving life my best.
