She was an activist in the Civil Rights Movement, whom the United States Congress called "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".

Took me three reads to realize your poem said "freedom mother" instead of "fighter," completely due to my preconceived expectation. It makes a lot of difference in this poem. Of the lines, it is the strongest, although the others are descriptive.
