When the Rain Danced for Me

When the Rain Danced for Me

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

When the Rain Danced for Me

It was a rainy day
and the clouds held their stay.

I was in my bedroom
feeling the gloom.

It was long ago,
yet, I remember the woe.

That night was the school dance,
to go, I hadn’t a chance.

The rain poured in sheets,
the night, bleak.

But the truth plain,

I wasn’t going even if it hadn’t rained.

I would have felt out of place,
quite frankly, I wasn’t the same.

So, I stayed home
and imagined the dance of my own.

(One may wonder,
one may ponder
why I write this sad
memory of the past.

I don’t feel sorry for myself,
nor feel regret… but wealth.

For I can write this to show others like me
that they’re not alone in their disabilities.)

Later that night,
the rain poured with grander might.

I watched from my window with glee
when the rain danced for me.
