Their Whole Hearts

Their Whole Hearts

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

Their Whole Hearts

To the one she loves,
she gives her whole heart.

She dares not think
if in his life, she wasn’t a part.

A relationship has blossomed
into a bouquet of blessings.

Alive and thriving
as the bird spreads its wings.

Together they love--
love for all time.

She holds him dear,
and in her, a treasure he finds.

Over time, life gets in the way,
both become busy and overloaded.

Preoccupied with work and other things,
their love life has been secretly demoted.

Finding time to talk becomes a challenge,
as time seems to lack.

Only morning smiles seem to do,
as his lunch she packs.

One day she receives a call--
a call which leaves her dumbfound.

For he kindly tells her to meet him
at their favorite restaurant in town.

She’s all aflutter as she slips into a dress,
many a thought scramble in her mind.

What was this?

She would surely know when looking into his eyes.

On the drive, she finally allows time
to reflect on their life together.

The good times outweighed the bad,
still, her thoughts are ablur.

He’d been brief on the phone,
only giving place and time.

When she’d asked what this was about,
his voice wasn’t there to find.

Making it to the restaurant,
she sees him sitting at a table for two.

It doesn’t take long for his eyes to lock with hers.

After many months, they see each other’s truth.

He stands to pull out her chair,
she sits, and conversation starts.

Both in the moment,
giving their whole hearts.
