The Horse Ride

 

One upon a time
when I was a little girl, maybe a pre-teen,
I was taken to meet a horse
who gave rides to children with disabilities.

 

I was excited to have the chance
to ride horseback.

Someone sat with me to hold me

while the chocolate brown horse trotted his familiar track.

 

There was another little girl,
much younger than I, who’d also come for the ride.

Our picture was taken, I held her in front of me
while atop the gentle horse, our smiles bright.

 

My sister and cousin had come along
and had a chance to ride in a horse-drawn buggy.

Off we went, on a little adventure,

enjoying the horse ride, seeing the scenes.

 

I felt free with the wind blowing through my hair,

I was loving the experience.

A beautiful day,

As though heaven-sent.

 

With the ride over,
I was back in my chair…
when the horse came to me
and nuzzled my hair!

 

That was the day
my love for horses grew inside.

I will never forget
the horse ride
