Her Fairytale Dream

Her Fairytale Dream

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

Her Fairytale Dream

In the tower she sat,
wishing her prince would come.

She had been there quite a while,
feeling every bit lonesome.

She’s waited patiently
for her prince to come sweep her away.

To save her from herself,
giving her a new name.

Sitting alone, her mind adrift
with her fairytale dream.

She liked to think he was out there,
awaiting the right time to be.

This little dream dared she
even when she couldn’t see past walls.

She dreamt year by year
that he would come to call.

Waiting in the window,
she dreamt him to be.

Her heart saw him leaping ov’r grassy hills,
finally reaching her, if only in her dream.

In brushing her hair,
she counted each stroke.

Desirous to see the sight
whence her dream awoke.

One glad day he came leaping to life
and she was filled with such glee.

He had come to her rescue--
he was more than her fairytale dream.
