A Gingerbread Christmas

A Gingerbread Christmas

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

A Gingerbread Christmas

There once lived a man

in a house made of gingerbread.

Having built it a year ago,
he still had no bread in his stead.

Not knowing what else to do,
he started eating a part of his wall.

Soon, he’d made a window where he’d partaken,
satisfied, in the days he had eaten it all.

However, he grew hungry again,
so he carved out another window.

He’d eaten to his fill,
but now he was cold.

Bundling in blankets,
he felt warm enough once more.

Then, his stomach began to growl,
so he carved part of the door.

This time, he ate a little,
saving the rest.

For it would soon be Christmas Day,
he’d want food even in his distress.

When Christmas Morning came,
his eyes flew open wide.

Feeling now unfamiliarly warm,
he got up to see the unexpected sight.

The walls of his house
were all neatly in place.

Had he dreamt up this tale?

He thought, What a disgrace!

Shimmering from the blankets,
he went to the stove to put on coffee
when he heard a thud on his modest door.

No one ever comes… what could it be?

Shuffling across the dirt floor,
he opened the door to find a surprise.

On the stoop lay a loaf of gingerbread,
but no one was in sight.

Picking it up, he dusted off the snow
and brought it to his meager, warned table as it was.

Thanks for the gift, he whispered, for he would have
A Gingerbread Christmas.

Thank you for reading my poem. God bless.
What a lovely tale of a dreamer who needed nourishment; so he basically ate his own gingerbread house; obviously poor and lonely himself, he really did need food and comfort, and the end of the tale is a happy one for him. Some caring person left him a loaf of gingerbread. We all should think of giving to those less fortunate at holiday time. Nice work!
Best, B.

You’re quite welcome!
Hi Melinda, I loved your little tale. I wondered where it was going to take me and I loved the ending. Loved the content. I would be this man, a gingerbread house, it wouldn't stand very long. In fact, I think I am going to go to the kitchen and have some eats, I have no self-control. I have enjoyed the journey through your words. Have a wonderful Friday. Hugs....Mike.
