While She Reads

While She Reads

A Poem by Melinda McQueen

While She Reads

Sitting alone in a diner,

She reads a book.

Engrossed in the story,

She is hooked.

Transported to a beautiful place

Where two lovers are walking hand in hand.

They are so happy in one another’s company,

Strolling through a brand-new land.

While she reads of love,

The gentleman at the next table

Is looking her way.

His gaze… stable.

She finds herself wishing

She was the girl in the pages.

Swept away by beautiful words,

Her dreams in far-away places.

What if she looks up?

Would he be her dream?

He awaits

While she reads.
