Too Close, Too Far

Too Close, Too Far

A Poem by Vincent Cuccolo

Relic memories breach the surface

Repression surrenders

Caves in

The crimson roses that cut my skin,

Ten miles deep,

The slam-dunk force that is you

Haunted by the hellos

Withered by the farewells

As you live your life in sweet passivity,

Uncaring to the apocalypse you thrust upon me

My end of days,

Brought on by the simple wave of your hand,

I’m locked up

THROWN INTO THE DUNGEON OF YOUR DISREGARD

Your pride, your ego…

Impenetrable

Impossible

Despite this soul that I’ve sold countless of times,

For you

Despite this spilling of an already spilled heart,

Because my best was always your worst,

Watching me die from every bullet I’d so willingly take

For you,

Always for you

No matter what I do

I’m too close for you to see me,

And too far to touch

Your stubborn ways forever a step ahead of me

Predicting my every move,

Dismissing me in the worst ways imaginable

Whatever you see fit

So creative, it makes me sick
