Can You See Me?

Can You See Me?

A Poem by Shannon Lee Rohn

~Can You See Me?~

  Can you see us Grandma?
  Can you see us?
We decorated the tree for you just like you like it,
Lots of glitter,
Balls of light pink and silver,
Just like you like it,
  Can you see it?
  Can you see it?
Mommy says you are sleeping,
So I didn't want to wake you,
You sleep for a long time Grandma,
How long is it going to take you?

Did you hear me sing in the school play?
Grandma I looked for you today,
Did you see me up on stage?
  Did you see me Grandma?
  Did you see me?
Mommy said I sounded like an angel,
Is that how they sound?
If you seen me, I think you'd be proud,
I looked for you, but you weren't in the crowd.

I hear mommy crying a lot Grandma,
At night when she prays,
She lays in her bed and that's where she stays,
When are you coming home Grandma?
You've been gone too many days.

Can you call us on the phone?
The real phone?
I try to use my toy phone to call you,
But you're never home,
I wanna talk to you Grandma,
Make sure you're not alone,
If I call you this time, will you answer the phone?
  Can you hear me Grandma?
  Can you hear me?

It’s gonna be Christmas, I made you a present and left it under the tree,
With extra wrapping paper, the way you like it to be,
You’d spend Christmas with us I was hopin',
It’s still under the tree waiting for you to open,
Mommy said it should be a surprise,
But I want you to know whats inside,
  Can I tell you Grandma?
  Can I tell you?
    Pleeeeaaasse?

I saw your beautiful big picture at the church,
I don’t know if mommy got it from the house on Birch,
The one that makes your eyes sparkle and shine,
Grandma I wait for you all the time,
I kept looking to the door, waiting for you to come in,
This is scaring me grandma am I going to see you again?
Am I talking too much Grandma?

I don’t see my daddy cry that much,
But he cried for you on the stand,
And Shannon did 2 fancy songs with her hands,
I looked back to see you standing there,
Looking to the empty space I’d stare,
It was just at a glance,
Can I go with you Grandma, Is this my last chance?
I’ll let you hold my hand,
Grandma come back,
You were supposed to teach me how to dance.

I finally published my book,
A lot of tears and patience is all it took,
Your name is in it, on the first page,
With waterproof ink so that it stays,
Your face everyday I’ve searched,
We’re here again grandma back at the church,
I’m going to walk down the aisle,
But I wanted you to make my dress,
You’re the only one I trust, you’re the best,
  Can you see me Grandma?
  Can you see me?

Today we decorated the tree,
Christmas just isn’t the same as it used to be,
I still believe in make believe,
So come on Grandma, dance with me,
As we laugh and tumble to the floor,
We had a good time that’s for sure,
I believe in fairytales, but this isn’t make believe,
I can hear you laugh, I can hear you breathe,
  I can see you grandma,
I can see you sitting next to me,
  Can you see me Grandma?
  Can you see me too?
I’m sitting right next to you.
