Upon The Shelf

Upon The Shelf

A Poem by EquivalentExchange
"

The words that never mattered.

"

It sat upon the shelf for days

wrapped in white

and stamped with care

you knew it would only bring you tears

you saw it coming

you heart plummets through the glass ceiling

and you return it to its place

I never meant to deceive you

I never meant to make you cry

I never lied when I said I loved

I woke up one day

with clouds in my eyes

but pushed them away to find

you were always there

but over time

I forgot how to be happy

It sat upon the shelf for weeks

put behind the romance novel

you read to hold yourself together

your desperate belief that you can find love again

then maybe you can live once more

I didn't mean to say goodbye

I should've said, "I'm sorry"

but now it's three weeks too late

I guess I deserve the guilt

it was always you

up until that day

where I fought to see the truth

but trusted in a lie

It sat upon the shelf for months

the man at the coffee place

told you he loved

said he wanted what you did

some of your hurt still remained

but you finally came around

and learned to love him back

I never meant to cause all that pain

I want you to know, that I never intended

to break your heart

but that's just what happened

and you may not remember

but my words

sat upon the shelf for years

This could probably use some work. We don't find out what "it" was sitting on a shelf until the last two lines. Putting it up front might help. Reading through the entire poem to find out it was your words she didn't pay attention to may not be strong enough to leave an impression on the reader.

The fifth stanza is very odd. ("told you he loved,") told you he loved what?
"said he wanted what you did" ? Not sure what that means? You may also want to think about details and concrete writing. I'm learning about them myself. Hope this helps. Keep writing.
