Pass On True Freedom

Pass On True Freedom

A Poem by JJ Johnson
"

Is destiny a destination of personal choice?

"

The fear of wrongdoing

Set ablaze in brimstone and fire

Unbind indulgence first

Pass on the freedom to desire

Only when a choice is made

Can truth set a soul free from the liar

Virtue stagnates in church

When lessons are preached to the choir

The fence before trespass

Constructs a mountain to trust sought

Hands tied behind the front

Holding back sin but not the thought

With no choices to make

The battle of innocence un-fought

Leads not to temptation

But further from the lessons untaught

Author's Note

JJ Johnson
Written 25 years ago while I was in college renting a room from a Jewish family along with a fellow student who was a born-again Christian. The previous year I roomed with another student who was a Black Muslim and another that was an Atheist. I had grown up a Catholic but had lost my faith several years earlier. I have been searching for it ever since and this was one of my early attempts at exploring the concept of what faith truly is. If you don't know what your looking for, you can't be sure if it's in front of you or somewhere on the road you've already traveled. If the road you are on is not one you chose to take, but one someone has set for you, whoever mislead you to take that path should serve your fate. Your destination must be your own or there was no freedom to choose.
