Clementine

Clementine

A Story by Leviathus Fortes

Clementine was a ragdoll
With two button eyes
She had very curly hair
And a patchwork dress
She had a girl named Sally
With whom she did play
They were the best of friends
She loved her very much
One day when Sally went to school
Clementine awoke
Her perception quite a blur
She had noticed something missing
One of her button eyes was gone
She searched under the pillow
Under the covers as well
Then she leapt down from the bed
She crawled around while looking
It wasn't under there
She ran to the toy box
Where all her other friends stayed
None of them had seen her eye
So out they all came to help look
Everyone searched around the room
But nothing could be found
Clementine was frantic
What was she to do
When Sally returned and saw the eye missing
She'd throw Clementine away
No child wants to play with broken dolls
It's the same with broken toys
Clementine was scared
She did not want to go
But it was already too late
The bus pulled up
School was out
She'd spent the whole day on her search
What happens when Sally walks through that door
What would happen next
The others jumped back into their box
And pulled the lid closed
Clementine climbed up the bed and sat back into place
She heard footsteps coming up the stairs
She heard footsteps down the hall
Then door cracked open
Sally was now in the room
Sally set her backpack down
As she walked towards bed
Clementine just watching her
With fearful thoughs stuck in her head
Sally picked up Clementine
And carried her to her desk
Sat Clementine down
And opened up the drawer
She pulled out something silver
It what a needle
Clementine was doomed
At least that's what she thought
Until she saw a spool of thread
Then Sally reached into a pocket
That Clementine had on her dress
She pulled out a button
Then pushed the thread through the needle's eye
She stitched the button back on Clementine
Who was now relieved
Sally loved her little dolly
And now had fixed her up
And given her a hug
Clementine was happy
Then she pondered for a moment
Of the day at the park
She had fallen off the swing
That's when the button had come off
The button was in her pocket
It had been there all along
Always in the last place that you look
She recalled her only pocket
Sally had kept it by her heart
