Wonder Lost

Wonder Lost

A Poem by Nicholas Enloe

walking down cracked sidewalks,

kicking rocks and acorns further ahead,

hoping for a sound of birds,

but chirps of squirrels abound.

yesterday blinded my eyes,

today the clouds bring dusk at noon,

and leaves are grayer than years past.

looking for someone to wave at,

to greet with a smile,

but casting my gaze from three passing,

then quiet drowned by lawns mowing,

stops only once inside,
