Chelsea Smiles

Chelsea Smiles

A Poem by R. M. Adams
"

This is a piece I wrote using specific words from a list for my ENG 050 class. It's a little morbid, so reader's discretion is advised :)

"

The velvet sunset melts
A veil of amber and marigold
Anointed with iris
Plays ceiling to the city of Glasgow
There upon the jagged streets
Pivot a pair of bridled steeds
Drawing up behind them the nightly hearse
Through the rain that puddles
In the dips of the road

Wooden wheels tweak and tremble
She chokes the reins - the embalmer’s daughter
And descends from her perch
Down to whispered feet

The Scottish air pecks her scars
Raven hair running riot
She withdraws into a zone
That spaces the bar and the bakery
And waits for the man
Who razed her

He came as she knew he would
Old, battered, decrepit
They had always shared a similar scowl, she thought
Before stubbing his own
Into the concrete

Sharpened knife shimmers
A reflection of her jackal’s grin
She carved his cheeks from
Ear to ear
Before taking to his throat
And slitting it through

He wheezed and hissed, gasping
Thirsty soil sipped the soaking scarlet
They had never looked so alike
As life drifted out from his vacant eyes
Dragging his corpse to the cart
And throwing it atop the rest
It was the only way in the world
Daddy could ever make Chelsea smile
