Distance

Distance

A Poem by R.M.C

I swore till death do us part

But is it the death of the body

Or the death of the mind that unbinds us?

Your body remains but your mind is gone,

The cruellest curse the gods can bestow upon us,

For I suffer the pain of your passing

Without the eventual ability of moving on.

Every day, I look upon your strangers face,

And every day, I receive an old memory

Of a touch, a laugh, a promise, a place,

And each memory is a knife to the heart.

You were the rock upon which my life was built,

The core of my very being,

And now with you a catalyst to my despair,

My will and joy of life is quickly fleeing.

You were once the stutter in my breath,

Taking my breath away with your beauty,

And the flutter in my heart,

Making it sprint and even miss a beat,

You were once the tremble in my fingers

As my love was almost uncontainable,

And the warmth that lingers,

Breathing life into the soul.

Without you my life is but an existence

Of longing and pain,

The sparks of wonder and joy snuffed out,

Each bleak day is now one and the same.

Your smile and laugh,

Any would be better than fame,

Your touch and words,

Any would be a bigger miracle than if an Angel came.

I know this is your existence,

Until your heart gives out,

But I can’t stand my reminiscence

And anguish any more.

I’m going to end my pain

By ascending to heaven

Where we will meet again

When your body follows your mind.

I wrote this in case you were to wake

And hear of my choice,

I only hope you don’t hate me

And could hear my voice:

“I hope you are forgiving

And continue living,

For I would love to look down on you

And see the life you pass through

Before we are finally reunited,

When you are truly ready.”

There are many cases where someone's mind can be lost before their body such as when people fall into comas or suffer (one of many different) complications with the brain. This poem is for the loved ones of these people.
