This Mortal Shell

This Mortal Shell

A Poem by Marlon Ferguson
"

...just thinking...

"

When my worldly spirit passes

Far beyond this mortal shell,

High above Earth’s waving grasses

Where view of Heaven and of Hell

Before mine eyes in sequence flashes,

‘twill be futile to resist the path

(That road has long been taken);

Yet, resigning to an unknown wrath,

Forgotten and forsaken,

Seems not a fitting aftermath.

Where within living lies repose?

Does struggle not define the prize?

And if not, why ennoble those

Whom Fate shawn light before their eyes

Yet blinded others as it chose?

Fairness, justice, hope and prayer--

Fine sentiments for honored peace--

Shall shrivel where modest mortals fare

‘till tears at every privileged feast

Drown out indifference everywhere.
