When the Earth Breaks Down

When the Earth Breaks Down

A Poem by Raven Held

What do you do when you’ve tried your best,

But it all fails eventually?

What do you do when you help someone,

But you’re taken for granted complacently?

What’s the point?

What do you say when others accuse you,

And your voice is carried away by the wind?

What do you say when you want to comfort someone,

But the words die on your lips?

What’s the point?

When it all collapses

Under the strain,

When it all breaks down

Weeping in pain,

Does the earth still spin on her own,

Or crash down, losing her restrain?

Why do we struggle so hard

To hide our tears and fears,

Why do we want to awe others,

When we know deep down that it is all a veneer?

Who is it all for?

Why do we make peace only when the worst has happened,

And give help only when one is in his darkest times?

Why do we only realise how much

Someone means to us until we lose them?

Why wait till now?

When it all collapses

Under the strain,

When it all breaks down

Weeping in pain,

Does the earth still spin on her own,

Or crash down, losing her restrain?

Who is willing to shoulder all the blame

For everything that goes wrong in the world?

Who can alleviate all the hurt that everyone goes through

And hold it up forever?

When does it all fall?

Who do we blame when we’re mistreated in any way,

And the world ends with the last whip of the belt?

Who do we turn to when it all comes down,

The walls that we’ve built in fear with no-one to help?

When does it all stop?

When it all collapses

Under the strain,

When it all breaks down

Weeping in pain,

Does the earth still spin on her own,

Or crash down, losing her restrain?

How will our tears be melted away

With the love in a single touch?

How can we eradicate the fear in us,

When wrath has frozen our very hearts?

Something’s wrong.

How should we help when we don’t know how,

And everything’s beyond repair?

How is it that innocent people should die everyday,

While others take their own lives in despair?

Something’s wrong.

When it all collapses

Under the strain,

When it all breaks down

Weeping in pain,

Does the earth still spin on her own,

Or crash down, losing her restrain?

Where do we run when the ground shakes

And we’re off our tether?

Where do we hide when the sun stops shining

And we plunge into starless nights?

Maybe we’re lost.

Where can we find an open space,

Where were are free to laugh and scream out loud,

Where can we write stories of enchanted forests,

When there are no more left to write about?

Maybe they’re gone.

When it all collapses

Under the strain,

When it all breaks down

Weeping in pain,

Does the earth still spin on her own,

Or crash down, losing her restrain?

When will we give in to our fears,

And stop pretending to be what we aren’t?

When will we stop being so selfishly self-absorbed,

And care more for the ones we love?

That would be the day.

When will the abyss of hate

Finally touch ground?

When will the whispers of the wind

Answer us what we’re clueless about?

For that day, we’ll wait.

When it all collapses

Under the strain,

When it all breaks down

Weeping in pain,

Does the earth still spin on her own,

Or crash down, losing her restrain?
