delerium: lost to lady winter in north dakota

A Poem by J. Randall Dodd

[i]

barren, wind-swept plain

white, wan, frost-frozen plain

black birds leave tracks

atop snow-covered tracts

of sugared beets

iced beneath black, bird feet

[ii]

the cries of cold, winter wind

crack the window pane

the breaths of blustery wind

frost the window pane

this hiemal flurry will not wane

black bird tracks atop tracts now

concealed beneath wind-swept snow

want beget wants and they beget

dreams of warmth and sunshine's glow

dreams that i am bound (with time) to forget

[iii]

shall i become like you?

lost to the ice, the folds of ever-present

snow; unable, incapable of remembering like you,

saying, “an ounce of whiskey dulls the pain and resentment

brought by this wintry hell made permanent”

and so i do- i too forget and become like you

i do not long for spring anymore (like you)

and so i transform!  a native, in love with lady winter

and i scream a primal note from gut and throat, bidding, adieu!

i've gone to fill the barren with my final echoes of fertile pleasure
