tragical portrait of a cotton pickin' slave

tragical portrait of a cotton pickin' slave

A Poem by J. Randall Dodd

heat's heaped upon

intolerable heat.

cotton just seems to prick

more&more

each time picked.

w/each passing moment

he appears to melt away,

drip

by dark drip

into the soil.

his forced

labor&toil

provides nourishment

for the white

he has grown

to hate.
