Burning Out

Burning Out

A Poem by Timothy Ryan

Hope always kept a burning light on for you

While you were held close in the arm’s of another lover

When I was drowning away in one of those nowhere bars

When we were still young

You can even ask desire

Whether it was in those whispers to the stars

Or at the end of every lonely cigarette walking home

It was always you

Dreams didn’t care what wasn’t supposed to come true

Those scenes in the back of the poolhall that summer night

The lighter we shared sitting on the curb

The backseat of the taxi that drove us somewhere close to heaven

Life wouldn’t wait any longer

You stopped at nothing at your first chance

I let vagrancy guide the way

We almost had it

Another year just flashed by again

Your second kid is on the way

I took my third trip to the liquor store this week

It’s getting too dark to see that old light anymore

I’ll see you at the bottom of another bottle
