Cirrus Business

Does you kid pester you with questions like, "Why is the sky blue?" Mine too, and I wrote this bit of flash fiction to explain it all.

God burst into the conference room and thundered into the throne at the head of the table. “Sorry I’m late, everybody. It’s been a crazy, crazy sixth day. Okay, status updates. Mike?” 

All haloed heads turned toward the boss’ top assistant. “Looking good,” Michael trumpeted. “Light and dark separated, heaven and earth created, fish in the sea, man on the land. Everything’s perfect, boss, except-“

“Except?” God looked as displeased as He had been with Lucifer’s creation of mosquitos. “Except what?”

“Well, sir, back on day two of this project we never decided what color the clouds should be,” Michael explained. “Lucifer wanted black-“

“Lucifer wants to paint everything black,” stormed God as He stared down the mischievous angel. Gotta keep my eye on that one, He thought. “And?”

“And Gabriel wanted blue,” Michael continued. God waved him off and addressed Gabriel.

“Dude, two-thirds of the earth is blue. The sky is blue. Enough with the blue, ok, buddy? Here I am, creator of everything, and I’m arguing over color swatches, He lamented. “Tell ya what, executive decision time, boys and girls! We’re going with-“

The Almighty was interrupted with the deep gongs of a celestial clock. The assembled angels gathered up their belongings and prepared to leave. “Whoa, whoa, whoa,” God boomed. “Where do you guys think you’re going?”

“It’s the seventh day,” a sheepish Michael answered. “Time to rest, boss. Contract rules.”

Damn unions, God grumbled. Gotta remember to never enter into any covenants again. “Ok, fine. Whatever. We’ll leave the clouds blank. Good job, everybody. Dismissed” The room emptied at God’s command.

I should probably go spend some quality time with the kid, anyway, He reasoned.
