The Sea, the Twilight

The Sea, the Twilight

A Poem by Mariah Jane

Wandering, I heard a quiet voice shift across the wind.

Calling, Calling me onward to the Sea, “Come! Come!” it cried

And I heard its crashing waves. But Alas! It is beyond my grasp.

I closed my eyes and I felt the cool breeze move through my hair,

And I tasted the salty sea air, just over the fields and hills.

To the Sea! To the Sea! My heart cries and yearns for me to go.

I long to run along the shores, the water spraying about me,

To taste the salt and breathe the free air, and to feel the wind about me.

To be Free! That is my yearning, to sail the wide Sea and smell it…

Oh to taste the salty air, to feel the breathe of the wind as I sail...

What more could one want? What more could there be?

I looked out, in my wanderings I saw, as the sun set, the beauty and Awe

Billowing mist in a wide, long plain, and sweeping shadows dancing As waves. I felt the breeze and I heard the songs that the crickets played.

Twilight! Fair Twilight! Such a stillness is there…Could it be…

That as I sigh, even this could be calling me? Impossible! It cannot be.

To the Sea! Yet, to the Twilight…My heart does cry…But to which

Do I yearn to be called by?

Which road should I travel? Twilight of Mist and Shadow…or…

To the Sea of Strength and Majesty? These two roads, perhaps, may meet.

And then, maybe, my heart will be at peace. For what is one,

After you have seen the beauty of the other?

To the Sea! To the Sea! My heart still does cry…

Yet, Twilight and beauty does my heart live by.

So Twilight will I travel, alone in the stillness and peace,

But, To the Sea! To the Sea! Will my heart still cry.

For the Fury, for the power, for the strength do I long,

For grace and beauty, and majesty and peace, yet…still…

I walk, in Twilight and Shadow.

But, To the Sea! To the Sea! Will my heart still cry.

What's not so good about it? It has a nice tempo to it and you can just imagine the heart being pulled in different directions. I think it's pretty nice :)

I like that this is so light-hearted, so filled with excitement and possible regret. Such youth and adventure, where the greatest question is where you want your heart to lead you to. The poem flows very well. The poem seems to interrupt a bit at lines 17-18, but since they also express some hesitance and indecision, I think it makes sense.

The imagery is nice! The pictures you paint with your words are very vivid. I think fixing some of the lines syllable-wise would give it a better flow, but I really enjoyed it
