The Path Around the Sun

The Path Around the Sun

A Poem by Richard Hartshorn
"

There are some things I'm just sure of.

"
We were pounding down glasses of tomato juice
and I tried to tell myself
there was no hope for anything past this moment.

When you were outside filling the
bird feeder
I watched you through the window
wiping it down to get a better view of your face
(Dont say I never cleaned anything)

When I was young
my grandmother had this tiny toy bird
kept in a cage
that sang to my little ears every morning

She didnt give it to me when she left
but when I first met you
I thought of how pretty it might look
resting on your palm

...and much of the appeal of this piece is inexplicable, at least in technical terms; it is very visual, almost cinematic, and it has a combination of the narrative and the winsome/whimsical that is somewhat Brautigan-esque. It is oddly charming, and it is very nicely done.

It's been forever since I've read any of your work, I'm so sorry about that. You probably don't even remember me, sorry about that too.

I found this to be comical, cute... until the end and thats where my heart just melted. Very, very good. I loved it.

Funny, I was just thinking about a toy bird singing in a cage. I really like the idea the first paragraph conveys of someone who hopes despite trying to tell himself there is no hope. Beautiful impactful images.
