Haiku Antics

Haiku Antics

A Poem by Jerome F Knox III pseudonym Nefarious J. Dorsey
"

Why Free verse hates the Haiku

"

Ebb and flow penned down
Boa constricting my flow
Suppressing my muse

Five is so damn hard
Seven is probably worst
Five still hurts me more

No free verse allowed
I think this is so darn foul
It hinders my flow

You're a free verse hater
A serial muse killer
Who will serve no time

Natural instincts
To intertwine all my rhymes
Not allowed this time

Inside this coffin
Form restrictive in nature
Words need air to breathe

My free verse you killed
Mr. Haiku I hate you
So rigid you are

You killed me in five
Then seven more wounds
Pierced me
It all feels the same?

Over the years I had a disdain for Haiku poetry because of its restrictive nature, I had to prove to scholars that i could write other forms of poetry as they battled me that Free verse was not a legitimate form of poetry. it is through writing and reading other forms of poetry that I am able to excel in Free verse.

Connected Haiku's! I love this! You get your point across with imagery and less rhyme. Nice job.

Ahhh the struggle of an artist. I refuse to comply to any structure. If it flows it flows. If not..still going for it. The message is what is important, I feel. Love.

Ttocs... Thanks for the kind words and the message...
As an African American child I struggled with and was ridiculed by teachers that my writing style was not poetry. In order to succeed and get through their classes I had to conform to their rhetoric until I was in a position to blaze my own trail. Even on another website a university professor out of Australia challenged the notion that free verse was a recognized form until he read my body of work and admitted that he was wrong. Back then acceptance was more difficult to obtain.

Free verse is quite legitimate...can't argue with ginsberg, creeley, ferlinghetti, plath, sexton, levertov and many others...
but if there has to be form, i think that haiku is challenging, and i like that haiku and senryu says so much in fewer words....you did this well...you put several of them together and kept a thread that bonded them....and the theme.
