Sensory Deprivation

Sensory Deprivation

A Poem by Jerome F Knox III pseudonym Nefarious J. Dorsey

Sunsets bowing
To the pending dusk
The lights in the cafe
Become dim and I
Start to panic
Cause I over stayed
My welcome
I texted an old lover
A message
" I brought you a book"
I was hoping to mask
The pain with pseudo-jubilation
But I knew she would feel
The elation I was facing
Wasn't real
I hoped I texted the right person
Became a wayward
Concern that was fleeting
Little by little
Inch by inch
I finished the overpriced
Lukewarm Carmel something
Something
As the night started
To hide the park
Where the homeless
Sleep alone
Under the skies
Of a chilly
Unforgiving moon
That takes turns
With the sun
Each making light
Of their situations
I grabbed the overpriced
Java and made a mad
Dash out the door
I stand in the middle
Of the sidewalk
I am in panic mode
The night caught me
With my pants down
Exposing my vulnerabilities
As my visual acuity was blinded
I was handicapped
Even more
No walking stick
No seeing eye dog
No boy scouts
I had nothing to
Grab on except
My instincts
I took a deep breath
I inhaled
I exhaled
And remembered
I had studied
Cyber brail
So I looked
Down the street
Every thing was
A blur
I separated
Things into colors
Red stop maybe yield
Yellow caution
Keep your guard up
Green go, gone
The status of
The money not
In my pocket
I fumble
In life's darkness
Using tolling bells
To ring my perceptions
Car horns became
Sonar devices
To guide my
Vulnerabilities
Along with knowledge
Of colors
I spotted my yellow
Beater and took
A deep breath
Cause I feared
What was next
The drive home

This speaks of a free fall and how terrifying it is to feel lost and blinded. I can relate to this, not knowing where to grab, fearing the next step will be off a cliff. The first line, sunsets bowing the the pending dusk....beautiful imagery that flows.
