DARK ANGEL

DARK ANGEL            

 

As the surface of the water approaches
The darkness in my soul encroaches
Too often no one understands
How much of me this life demands.

I mask a smile to hide my pain
I always hope it will be in vain
But no one really takes the time
To see that mask I hide behind.

The dark angel comes after me
Sent by shadowy sinister powers that be
The gloominess within me hearkens
The sticky mire in my black soul darkens.

The water hungers and beckons for me
The current snares to take me to he
The dark angel, who waits to steal my soul
Conspiring to convince me I'll never be whole.

Wow. This is a beautiful and terrible poem (terrible as in, what it is talking about - not at all in terms of how well it is written!) The images of the ominous water/mire and the dark angel do an excellent job of portraying the hopelessness and feeling of inescapability brought on by the experiences you describe. I have never been in a situation as painful as the ones I know you endure, but I can relate in some way to this poem. The second stanza, about hiding behind a cheerful mask while in truth hoping that people will recognize the disguise and will reach out to help you, is particularly meaningful to me. I've been through similar experiences. Overall, well-written and profoundly expressive. Nice work!
