Just A Dream (The Rewrite)

Just A Dream (The Rewrite)

A Story by Linda Phillips
"

When your dreaming, sometimes you just need to wake up; no matter how good the dream is, everyone needs to wake up. Now, wake up Kaylah.

"

Tired eyes drooped closed as the world faded away from one Kaylah Williams. A heavy sigh left her weakened body as her mind drifted to a different scene, a scene of a peaceful, lusciously green field filled with a seemingly endless blanket of wild flowers.

Blades of lush grass rustled softly against each other and the flowers among them as scattered leaves glided upon the wind like an invisible rollercoaster, swirling and tumbling against it. Kaylah opened pale green eyes to the beautiful scene before her, staring towards the midnight blue sky, the millions upon millions of shimmering, sparkling stars and the pale grey-white full moon, basking its rays over each delicate flower, and revealing a small lake in the middle of the field, surrounding by a ring of dark, blood red roses with a tall oak tree near it.

The girl pushed herself off the ground before dusting herself off. She adorned a pale, dark blue dress with a white bow around the waist, floral patterned stockings and white ballet flats with tiny bows gracing them. She placed her hands on the bow on the dress, tracing her fingers along its design.

“This isn’t what I was wearing before…” her face shone with curiosity and confusion as she let go of the bow and walked towards the ring of blood roses, dark raven hair blowing gently through the breeze.

“Hurry along my love, I want to see you…”

A male’s voice echoed through the almost empty field. Kaylah stopped in her tracks before looking towards the oak and saw the figure of a man. He looked to be 6ft 2, dark hair and dark brown eyes. He appeared to be wearing dress slacks, a dark red dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and black dress shoes. Kaylah happily smiled upon seeing the man’s face, a light blush graced her cheeks. He held his hand out towards her, chuckling loudly through the silence as he smiled gently at her.

“Come now love, come here to me and we can lie underneath the sea of endless stars…”

With quiet, unheard steps, Kaylah bounced happily towards the man, her smile widening as her hair twirled against the breeze blowing past her; eyes brimming with happy tears as she ran into his strong chest, arms wrapping around his neck in a tender embrace. He kindly returned her embrace, his arms snaking their way around her waist and keeping her body as close to his as humanly possible.

Their embrace seemed never ending to the two. The girl nuzzled into the crook of his neck, inhaling his scent " a combination of caramel and green apple as a silent tear from her eyes trailed slowly down her cheek, only to be caught by his finger. A happy giggle erupted from pale pink lips as she looked into dark chocolate eyes as his stared deeply into hers.

“Now my love, come lay with me. We can lie under the stars now you’re here.”

He moved away from her embrace to sit down at the base of the dress, leaning against it with a perfect view of millions of sparkling lights. He patted his thigh, telling her to sit between his legs, and that was what she did. Her soft back was pressed against his broad chest, her head resting close to the base of his neck. His slightly robust arms caught her in another embrace, his hands resting gently on her soft tummy.

Silence had filled the air between the two. The girl breathed a heavy sigh and rolled slowly onto her side, cuddling into his chest. Her ear was pressed against it, just above his heart. She listened to his slow but steady heartbeat, eyes closing as she listened to the beat it played. It seemed like it could almost help play a small melody or lullaby.

She felt his hand run its way through her hair, soft against his fingers. His hand connected with her jaw, before finally resting underneath her chin, tilting her head to face his. Her pale orbs fluttered open to meet his eyes, a small smile forming as he returned the same one back at her; his thumb gently caressing her cheek.

“Kaylah my love, you are so beautiful… Moonlight shines in your eyes as though the moon himself would like to colour such perfectly pale green in a sea of grey-white… Tell me, my dear…”

He stares towards her, before looking away up at the moon, its rays shining slightly off his slightly tanned skin.

“Tell me my dear, do you love me so? Do you feel the love that flows between us? Like the love between the spirit of the moon and that of the spirit Kuekuatsu?”

She sighs lovingly to him, her hands cupping his cheeks and turning his face back towards her, smiling softly towards him.

“Yes my love, I feel that love, the love that we so tenderly share… I only ask that you my Kuekuatsu do not fall for a Trickster’s swindle.”

“Never will I do such an act, I won’t for you, my spirit of the moon, to tender and caring.”

His eyes close as he moves slowly towards her ear, tucking her locks behind her ear. He chuckles softly, kisses her cheek softly.

“Oh Kaylah… I love you so…”

And with that, he moved towards her pale pink lips, a small smile playing on his lips just as he was going to connect the two in a passionate, tender kiss.

Weary eyes slowly cracked open to a flash of blinding white, pain filling every inch of her body. Groaning as she went, she slowly moved her hands to run her eyes in an attempt at waking her up; her arms stung with a sharp pain as she stretched her arms. She looked at her surroundings, laying her hands carefully over her stomach.

Looking at the state of her room and bed, she decided that she was in a hospital room, with an IV drip attached to her hand. The curtains were a pale lime green and were pulled back, revelling golden rays of sunshine flowing into the white room. To the right of the room, there was a polished, wooden table adorning white vases of colourful flowers, delicately wrapped presents and a few cards stuck in between what was already there. The last notable objects in the room were on the pale, brown, polished bedside table. It held a lone black porcelain vase with two slightly wilted red roses and a small black velvet box.

Her eyes looked at the deep blood like red of the roses, admiring them from her current state, wishing to hold them in her hands to smell there beautiful scent. Her eyes then scanned down towards the small box. This small box held something secret to her and she wanted to discover it. With all her strength, she pulled herself up to sitting upright position with the self-help pulley connected to her single person bed. The pain struck her body with each inch she moved.

She took a look at her arms before going to the box. Her arms had deep purple and black bruises everywhere, all down her arms, her stomach and most likely to her, her legs. Little cuts and stiches also graced her bruise.

“How did this happen…? When did I get all these marks and cuts…?”

Her eyes filled with confusion as she reached over and grabbed the small velvet box. She fiddled around with the box in her hands for a moment, before she held it in front of her. Her hands met with the lid, her eyes closed just before opening the lid. A click from the box opening met her ears, acknowledging her that she should open her eyes.

A small, shiny diamond sparkled against the sunlight that softly hit it, and shining off the not too thick, not too thin band that held it. A beautiful diamond ring, the diamond cut into a small, delicate heart.

Green eyes filled with crystal tears, gently falling down her cheeks as she adorned the beauty of the ring she held. She took it out of the box, placing it back on the table before examining the ring. She found something engraved on the band of the ring. Looking carefully, she read the words aloud.

“Marry Me, Oh Spirit Of The Moon.”

More tears fell from her eyes as she slid the ring onto her ring finger, admiring the glittery effect that shone from the gem. Excitement filled her as she smiled contently and giggled to herself.

“I can’t wait to tell you my answer my Kuekuatsu.”

A short moment passed as she continued think happy thoughts of marriage.  These were cut short when there was a knock at the door of her room; she called out for whoever it was to come inside.

Walking inside was a man in white coat, long khaki pants, a navy shirt and black shoes. He wore think, black rimmed glasses over bright blue eyes. His hair was a wavy ash blonde.

“Hello, I’m your doctor Michael Jones; it’s good to see you awake Miss Williams. How are you feeling?”

Small talk was exchanged between doctor and patient. Both Kaylah and Alex had been involved in a car crash with another car. He had explain the extent of her injuries. Shattered pieces of glass had cut her skin, and the force of her body hitting the car had only been enough to bruise her luckily instead of breaking her bones. But once her injuries had been explained, then came Alex.

“My boyfriend,” she looked down towards her ring before flicking her eyes back towards the doctor, “fiancé, is he alright? Can I see him please? I want to tell him my answer to his proposal.”

The somewhat happy smile on Doctor Jones had diminished to a sad frown. He moved from the foot over her bed to the right side, placing his left arm gently on her shoulder.

“I’m so sorry Miss Williams… But he didn’t make it through surgery...”

Tears and depression began to seep into Kaylah’s heart, tears falling like rain.
