If You Ever Loved Me

If You Ever Loved Me

A Poem by Anna

The dark red fruit of the summer

Strawberries, deep

Painfully swollen like

The infection in the wound.

The flesh spread over

The shadowy cherry

On my tongue.

Skin thin, fragrant blossoms

Fade into warm air.

As the grass grows green

And thick and full of life

It slowly withers

Into the clouds falling down.

Heat waves pass by

Trickling morning dew

In the prickly garden leaves

Sick beside the watermelons.

Late in the season

The past changes the way

The month now feels.

Laying out in someone’s arms

Wine-dyed as the berries

In the night, in the thorns

Behind the shimmer of eyes

In the treeline.

Kind of dark but in a tempting sort of way. A puzzle of words that piece together a deeper meaning, this one touched me and kind of made me stare. Nicely done
