Hummingbird

Hummingbird

A Poem by Anna

We are good people

Of this I’m certain.

And so I need you to talk

When the sun

Comes in through the

Pale curtains.

Over your dark tea

Quiet lips and darting eyes--

I will not hurt you

At least

Not on purpose.

We are good people

And your hands

Are warm

Over my chest.

When I move close

To you like this--

Can this silence

Between I and your

Racing heart

Fall to words out loud?

I plead in signs

That only angels and

The garden gnomes know.

It’s a kind of waiting

I’ve practiced

Searching for expressions

On your face.

The air is cool

The evening is winding

Down and down

So you can hear me.

No one else is watching

No one else is listening--

We are good people.

Let me in

To the haunted places

Within you.

Make my hands

Your home.

A cathedral of your

Most outrageous desires.

Where my love pools

You can do no wrong--

For what you have been

Tormented and ashamed of

I will cradle.

We are good people.
