Metamorphosis

A Poem by Rosemary Peel

Metamorphosis
Infant

Manipulative minor;
Appealingly helpless, incessantly demanding,
An inordinately selfish yet
Unintentional dictator...
Innocence personified.

Toddler
Embryo entity;
Teething and tantrums, developing guile,
Mastering mobility and speech;
Tirelessly active, incredibly curious...
Repetitive enquirer

Juvenile

Independent individual;
Heedlessly careless and disobedient;
Aggression masks uncertainty: life's a game,
Parents an irritant; teachers a bore...
Precocious teenager.

Adolescent
Pupating persona;
Bewildered, experimental, frustrated;
Self-willed, insecure and temperamental;
Has all the answers from a wealth of inexperience...
Omniscient egotist.

Adult
Fallible finite;
Certainties evaporate, responsibilities weigh in,
Geriatric infirmities beckon; childhood fades
To memory and sweet nostalgia...
Transition complete.
