Brutal indifference

Brutal indifference

A Poem by Rudi J.P. Lejaeghere
"

Science may have found a cure for most evils; but it has found no remedy for the worst of them all -- the apathy of human beings. Hellen Keller

"

I’ve picked it up somewhere

the brutal indifference of life

an accident, a murder, a disaster

how much does it says to us

we are reading it every day in the newspapers

with coffee and a butter cake

with our wet finger we turn pages

here a life away, there a tragedy

flipping the sheets

how much does it says to us

it is the far-off show

that we are watching on TV, in the news

preferably with juicy images and…

oh, that’s a shame

next channel, our favourite soap

how much does it says to us

blood, violence, rape

it’s still more thrilling

than we are touched

just think a little while

tomorrow this can also be

on our way.

yea. I concour with you. Science and technology as well seems to be our great ally. On the other hand it is the bane of the race of man. This calls to mind this philosophical concept..."we are capable of great good and great evil. Also, every thing has its benefits and disadvantages". It's left for us to tread well along the path we have chosen. Nice poem.

excellent poem. the lack of care, the bystander effect. what is wrong with us? I think this poem goes a long way to make one reflect on this particular deficit many humans possess.

The image you chose for the poem is excellent. I think about this brutal indifference often, and how I also fall under its sway sometimes

The example of reading a newspaper while reading about tragedies is a powerful one, and very true

"It's still more thrilling than we are touched" - wow, this is too often true. It is an unfortunate malady, a disconnect that this world suffers from
