Mental Sanctuary (Part 1)

Mental Sanctuary (Part 1)

A Poem by Baylin Snow

Millions of tiny drops fall upon me

I tremble from the dark cold night

street lamps illuminate the wet black road I walk

looking down, I see my shadow next to the broken yellow line

her silhouette darkened parallel to mine

I absorb it all as she spills her soul

no words or thoughts arouse in my mind

block after block trail behind us

making our way to the 4-way stop

Clumsily, we wrap our large green towel around us

and attempt to sit gently

We stare at the flashing red light

the continuity soothing to our spiraling minds

she talks with a distant stare

I throw in a word or two to let her know

i'm listening.

Tears brew in me as I watch them fall from her.

Vibrations erupt in my pocket

forcing me back into an emotionless mindset

my 'concerned' mother commanding us back home.

We hesitantly stand, gathering our items

I leave everything on the ground

arms wrapping around her

holding her tight.

Feeling her body shaking once she

allows herself to let go

causing mine to follow suit

Picking up everything,

then pulling ourselves together,

our walk home begins.
