Others

A Poem by Sam Davidson
"

A Villainelle, written last year in a particularly weird stretch of life.

"
Love is love and death is death
The mind can’t go where feet won’t tread
I speak in tongues, I take a breath
I cannot tell you right or if
I’m right to sing where others bled
Love is love and death is death
I cannot conjure spite or spit
A rhyme to line, a stomach fed
I speak in tongues, I take a breath
I cannot say I loved to live
Where honesty befits a bed
Love is love and death is death
Let the nightly clock slow tick
Or flush it fast for maidenhead
I speak in tongues, I take a breath
I want to save, I went to stand
And guard your shadow where you tread
Love is love and death is death
I speak in tongues and take a breath

The kind of mantra like repititions at the very end of stanzas here are interesting. They swing like the pendulum of a clock breath, death, breath, death from life to death and back again. The ryhme scheme is also rather interesting to, if you'll forgive my avoiding the real story going on here. This seems like it's on the edge of something but I cannot see what it is. Perhaps it is in my interpretation but I just cannot wrap my head around what you're trying to say here. Regardless, well writen as always, I hope I was of assistance.
