A Poem by Samuel I Moth

Long ago, when the castle yards were green
With ivy abreast the archways of stone,
When the westerly moats ran healthy and high,
As all the king’s children ran amok in the sun,
Lord Hamilton’s daughter with the darkest of eyes
Turned to me at the top of the hill
and graced me with her smile.

Returning from wars I sought those
dark eyes deeper than the northernmost moats;
In waking I slept
In sleeping I woke
To those dark eyes deeper
than the northernmost moats.

Go see those castle walls for me,
go touch the quiet moss that over them lay,
Remember me there by the old castle walls,
Remember me there and I will be free.
