The Swarming Bees

The Swarming Bees

A Poem by Sunflower/Sara Kendrick
"

I'll call it rhyme for now...About a happening in my early teens..

"

The angry bees or the mild

Grew together in the hive in my house next to the tree

Although could not understand as a child

That any of bees would hurt me

Those bees mating and taking to flight

Would cover and sting anyone in sight

Where we all alike hit the dirt lying low

Not wanting those bees to sting us that day

Now fifty-seven years later remembering you

If it had not been for you, I would not be here today

The orchard probably is not longer there

Wonder if those bee hives' boxes still sit

Next to the house at the edge of orchard

Or did those bees go back into the side of the house

Back with their honey and family

Author's Note

Sunflower/Sara Kendrick
When I was in my early teens, bees swarmed and a family member grabbed me and pulled me into a ditch and made me lay very still and flat..Then this person helped find the source of the bees..They had built a hive in a hole in the siding on the house..Sunflower

Always playing outside, running barefoot and rolling in the grass, I learned about bees and their stingers at an early age. It's a scary sight to see them swarm. Like so many things in the world, they serve a purpose, and in their case, a very important one. (pollination)
I'm glad you had someone there to take care of you, Sara.

A memory wrapped in fine words .. how lucky you were to have that thoughtful person with you. However, how woulderful that the same relative should take you to see the source of the bees .. the wonderful magic of nature .. so hope you grew to love honey!

Great job on describing this memory. I remember a few times seeing bees swarming and I was always terrified they'd land on me and sting me. I enjoyed reading your childhood adventure!

I bet this was an exciting and scary all at the same time. Memories are fun and writing them down and sharing them are important. Its a record of how we lived our lives. Our story. I give it 100.

I knew reading this poem it was a fond memory>> Such intimacy in the writing>> As if it was meant for the bees themselves>> Richly reminiscent!

There is such a richly woven history blended in this powerful account of the bees... these beautiful creatures that bring us sweet gold and stinging pain as well. Still just pondering what could have happened to you that day. Thankful as well you're here to share this with us.
