A Child's Heart

A Child's Heart

A Poem by Sara
"

A poem based on a line from To Kill a Mockingbird. (It seems only children weep)

"
Children are born pure at heart, mind, and soul
Children with hearts of glass raised by those with hearts of stone

Overtime, a child's heart spoils into the same stone of its elders
But while they have their hearts of glass, only children weep

There are two types of children: those born with hearts meant to be stone
And those born with hearts ready to battle against the stone hearted
Who grow out of their glass hearts and into hearts of diamond

But the diamond hearted are seldom unearthed,
And hearts of glass are broken often and easily
Easily shattered, with only stone left to fill the gap

Which is why our world is full of hearts of stone
Instead of pure hearts of glass and diamond

And in our stone world, only children weep
Children weep at the injustice of a pure hearts end

While others stand like statues of stone, reflecting their hearts
Watching the downcast and wondering why they weep

Children weep, and their hearts of glass start to break
And begin the process that turns a heart to stone
