Pause and Effect

 

When was the last time you slowed yourself,

slowed to a snail’s pace to smell the brewing morning

sniff the brisk, dewy air before the humidity sucked out its life?

 

When was the last time you admired her figure,

touching the woman before you simply to absorb her

instead of ravishing her until the evaporation of the moment?

 

When was the last time you did something out of sheer kindness,

leaving behind your selfish pride for the sake of generosity,

because the thought of karma being a b***h was too much for you to bear?

 

When I looked at you and told you how nice you looked,

did it ever occur to you that I was simply admiring your taste?

That I could adore you completely, for all of your flaws?

 

When I asked you to meet me for lunch tomorrow,

did you stop and think that maybe all I needed was an ear?

With a selfless act and the comforting arms of a friend?

 

When I asked you for a favor and you turned me away,

did you even consider how your rejection would make me feel?

And that all I really needed was the simplicity of you?

What a great title and theme!

I think this poem is very insightful, when it explains the simple things we
miss in life. We are constantly overlooking the obvious, always struggling to
have our life be more complicated. I like how it expresses our short comings.
I also like how it introduces a person who sees the simpleness of life and lives
by it.
